Last night I was at a wedding. It was, without a doubt, a celebration of love, and it was free and beautiful. Sparkles, smiles, dancing – it was blissful. This morning I was at church. There were ribbons and sparkling flags and claps and smiles. Why was I so surprised that my emotions at both events were actually quite similar? Both brought me joy, an appreciation for community and gratitude.
Just like events of life bring all the emotions, religion can too. When there is a time and place for serious self-reflection I think the joyous celebration of being God’s child deserves more time at church.
If you’ve been part of a church lately, what emotions have you been feeling there? Do you have an expectation or pattern of feeling a certain way? If so, why do you think certain emotions come along when you enter into church?
